Summer 2012

Mark your calendars!!!

Players - Please mark your calendars for the following camp dates. I'm in the process of confirming prices with the Otterbein Head Volleyball Coach (Monica McDonald) for our team summer volleyball camp. Monica will be coming to our gym to host your team camp. Monica is the coach that you all were able to work with at the OSU camp this past summer. Please mark your calendars for the following dates.

Team Camp with Coach McDonald at The Columbus Academy will be held on June 21, June 22, and June 23. There will be 2 sessions. One 2 hour session and one 3 hour session with a break for dinner in between. I will confirm the times and price per athlete as soon as we finalize everything. In the meantime, please mark your calendars for this team camp. All are welcome to attend.

Also, please mark your calendars for June 18-21 from 9-11:30pm. We will host a summer camp for grades 3-8th and we are inviting you all to help out! This is a great way to get back in to the swing of volleyball and to get the word out for younger kids to play volleyball at our school! So, again please mark your calendars!
Thanks for your time, and I will update soon as I receive more information and confirm details!

Player Uniforms

Dear Athletes and Families,

Player Uniforms (Warm up shirts and jerseys) should be turned in to Coach Gepper's Classroom washed and labeled with your name in a individual shopping bag. There will be a marked uniform bin in the classroom for you to drop it off and a sign up sheet letting us know the number of the jersey you are dropping off and the size of the warm up shirt. If you fail to turn in either your warm up jersey or uniform before Friday, October 28th, you will be charged to your Columbus Academy account. Again, YOU MUST MARK YOU JERSEY AND WARM UP SHIRT WITH YOUR NAME BY USING A SMALL PIECE OF PAPER AND PUT IT IN A SHOPPING BAG INSIDE THE BIN. Please do not disturb Coach Gepper if she is conducting class, just place the marked jerseys in the bin and sign the paper quietly. Please DO NOT bring your uniform and warm up to the banquet on Wednesday. Thanks for your attention to this.

Monday - Practice as usual 3:30 - 5:00

Tuesday - Practice will be from 4:30-6:00. Study tables will be conducted in Coach Gepper's room immediately after school until it's time for practice. We will take vans (if they are available - checking now) to dinner and then head out to Olentangy Liberty High School to watch the teams that we have a chance of playing. Parents are more than welcome to pick up their daughters at Olentangy Liberty High School if it's closer for you or if she needs to get home earlier.

Wednesday - Practice as usual 3:30 - 5:00

Thursday - Early Dismissal Practice will be from 1:15-3:00

Friday - Practice will be from 3:30 - 4:30 (I am going to inquire about having an earlier practice since the girls will be out this day. We have to make sure the gyms aren't being used by the Lower School first.)

Important Updates - PLEASE READ ALL

Dear Parents/Families and Athletes,
We have many important updates. Please read through carefully and mark your calendars.

- Senior Night is this TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2011. Immediately following the JV game we will celebrate our seniors on the court. Please try to be present for the JV match at 5:00 so you do not miss this event. We will celebrate with cake after the Varsity game. We are asking that all players (JV included) stay for this night to cheer on their seniors in the Varsity match and to celebrate afterward. Thank you for your cooperation with this! JV will have time after school to complete homework, so this should not be an issue.

- VOLLEYBALL CLUB - Parents and athletes- you will see a flyer coming home soon regarding volleyball clubs. Please encourage your daughter to tryout for a team. It will really benefit our program in the future and it's a great way to get make friends! I still keep in touch with a friend I met through club volleyball my freshman year in high school! :)

- Game Times for Saturday, October 15, 2011. Due to a change in schedule, we will be playing on 10/15 at 8:15 in the morning. We are asking athletes from both JV and Varsity to be at the gym by 7:30 AM to set up and be ready to play thereafter. We will be using both gyms this day. Our schedule will look as follows...

8:30 AM - North Gym CA vs. Whetstone (Varsity)
Jones Gym CA vs. Whetstone (JV)

Immediately following - Whetstone vs. Marion Catholic (Varsity)

After that match - CA vs. Marion Catholic

Because we play so early in the morning, we are strongly encouraging the JV team to stay for the Varsity matches that follow to help with warm ups and to cheer each other on. There will be a middle school MSL Volleyball Championship hosted at our school so we have to keep this day moving quickly to be out of the gyms by 11:00. Any extra help we can have that day will be much appreciated. If you are volunteering that day to help, please be at the gym no later than 8:00 AM. Thank you for your time and help!

- Parents, we are having difficulties with rides being on time after away games. Coaches are having to wait for 30 minutes to an hour for your child to be picked up. Please be courteous of our coaches schedules and try to be on time to pick up your child at The Columbus Academy when we are away. It would be greatly appreciate by all (including your child). :) Thanks again for your cooperation with this.

- TOURNAMENT UPDATE - After today's seeding meeting, we will play the winner of the Number 1 seed Pleasant vs. Horizon Science Academy on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22 AT 4:00 PM. We will be watching the game vs. Pleasant and Horizon Science as well on Tuesday, October 18 at 7:30 pm. Again, we play on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22 AT 4:00 PM. The site is to be determined tonight and will be up on the ohsaa.org website tomorrow. We will keep you posted. Please mark your calendars for this day. You can also go to that website to see the entire tournament bracket tomorrow.

Thanks for reading through all of these updates and I hope you all had a restful weekend!
-Coach R.

Friday's Practice Time and Updates

Hello families,

Friday's practice time (9/9/2011) will be from 3:15-4:30. Also, we've received an update that the girls will probably end as early as 4:00ish and as late as 6:00ish on Saturday's Millersport Invitational. Our Tri-Match vs. Whetstone and Marion Catholic will have Varsity playing both teams and JV playing ONLY Whetstone. Thanks for all of your help and have a great weekend!

September and October Volleyball Updates

Hello families,

I just wanted to send out a few updates I've received from the athletic office.

Reminder: Tomorrow's game vs. Heath has JV starting at 6:00pm and Varsity following. Please remind your daughter to tell Coach Gepper right after school if she will need a ride home from the game. We need to inform the bus driver to stay if we have more than 6 girls so this is very important.

Reminder: Saturday's 9/10 game AT MILLERSPORT will have Varsity starting at 2:00 pm. Please bring your daughter to Millersport High School no later than 1:15. If transportation is an issue, please inform the coaches immediately. I'm working on receiving more information from Millersport on game times, but it seems we may have a tournament style match later on so that does not give us a definite ending time. So far, we have 2:00 pm- CA vs. Sheridan, and 3:00 pm - CA vs. Millersport. There will be 5 teams participating and we are guaranteed 2 matches for sure. If we play in the tournament, we will play #3 vs. #4 and #1 vs. #2. Again, please plan to bring your daughter to Millersport that day by 1:15. Thank you!

Reminder: Sept. 20th - Game at Granville will have JV starting at 5:00 pm and Varsity immediately following.

Reminder/Update: 10/15 - Marion Catholic does NOT have a JV team. So Varsity will play Marion Catholic. We are double checking to see if JV will be playing Whetstone only that day.

Thanks again for all of your help, and a special thanks for stepping up to volunteer during games. We really appreciate it!

-Coach Roehrenbeck

URGENT for JV Parents: Libero Trackers Needed

The JV team needs at least two parents to help with libero tracking score sheets this season. More importantly, we currently have no one for this role for the first home game next Tuesday. This is very easy to do and you get a ringside seat for the games. If you can help with this role, please contact Cyndi Yacksoe to sign up

Game Week — Get Psyched!

Columbus Academy Varsity Volleyball Team
The Vikings kick off the 2011 season this Thursday against Newark Catholic. Games take place at Newark Catholic high school with Junior Varsity beginning at 5 p.m. and Varsity starting immediately following the JV game around 6 p.m. We need lots of parents and fans to support our team, so please plan ahead to make the trek east. Links to game schedules (including away game travel directions) may be found in the left blog column.

Parent Volunteers Still Needed

We still need parent volunteers to support the team. There are two ways you may help:

JV Games Need Parent Support
More parents are needed to staff remaining openings for JV games. These roles are a fun way to get involved in your athlete's sport and to get to know other parents.
Please contact Cindy Yakscoe to sign up(If you've not made a commitment, we may pull you out of the stands on game day!) Thanks to all the parents who have helped us fill up the Varsity schedule. We're ready to roll. Click here to view the schedules, roles and  open dates.

Football Concessions
We need parents to prep and sell food in the concession stand on Friday, Sept. 23rd. It's easy work and a great way to show your support. Reminder: ALL sports, including volleyball,  benefit from funds raised by food sales at home football games. Please contact Julie Frazier to sign up.

T-Shirts and Food

It's All About Teamwork
We heard that some of the girls may want to wear their new CA Volleyball Team T-Shirts at Friday's first home football game. To make that happen, Becca must collect ALL shirt money by Thursday so she may hand out shirts on Friday. The shirts are long sleeved and individually numbered for each girl. Every girl ordered a shirt.

Please write your check for $17.00 payable to "Rising Moon" and deliver to Becca at school Wednesday or Thursday. If all goes well, they will have their new T-shirts by Friday.

Fueling Up Our Teams
We are using the Academy Dining Hall to prepare snacks before each home and away game. We've chosen a selection of items such as turkey wraps, fruit and water. Snacks will be served in the dining hall or sent on buses for away games. Vegetarian items will be provided.

Jennifer Lange is coordinating this program with the dining hall. Please thank her when you see her.

The cost for each student for all 16 weekday games is $64.00. Please make your check payable to "Jennifer Lange" and drop off or mail to Jennifer at the CA Upper School office.

Note: There is one Saturday game for which students will need to provide their own food. The dining hall will be closed that day.

CA Volleyball is BACK!

Going up for the block
The Columbus Academy Volleyball program kicked off its 2011 season with an impressive start last night with Varsity and JV scrimmages against Gahanna Christian. Lead by captains, Becca Beitzinger and Lauren Vodnick, the athletes previewed skills and teamwork that bode well for an exciting season.

The 2011 Vikes are coached by a new staff of volleyball veterans. Amanda Roehrenbeck returns as head coach after a few years away from the program. She is supported by Heather Gepper and by Craig Dow, Junior Varsity head coach. The middle school team is coached by Jordan Ellis.

June 8: Athlete & Parent Meeting

Parents and Student-Athletes,

We will be having an informational meeting on June 8th at 5:00 pm in Coach Gepper's room in the middle school. Directly following the meeting will be physicals at 6:00 pm. Please plan to have your physical completed this night so that you do not have to worry about it at the last minute! We will begin open gyms the following day (Thursday, June 9 from 6:00-7:00pm). We plan to have Open Gyms each Tuesday and Thursday night this summer from 6:00-7:00 pm with the exception of July 7 which is during your OSU team camp. Open Gym changes will be posted on the blog. We hope our participation is high so we can continue throughout the summer. If participation is low, we may move to have Open Gyms one day a week. We may also increase the time to one hour and a half if need be. I will post any changes to this schedule on the blog. I look forward to meeting/seeing all of you again on June 8!

Thanks,
Coach Roehrenbeck
Your new/old Head Coach :)
