Banquet Celebrates Fun Year!

The team had a year-end banquet in the dining hall with Chipotle, gifts and cake — what could be better? How about mementos and buddy gifts! The coaches handed out Varsity letters and JV certificates — and complimented all of our athletes on their team spirit and positive attitudes. Congrats to the Lady Vikes and Coaches Gepper, Yakscoe, Boyd and Walker!

Individual awards included: Varsity: Viking Award – Alyssa Scheer; MVP – Lauren Vodnick and Jill Woodard; Junior Varsity: Most Improved – Megan Vern; Viking Award – Mackenzie Bell and MVP – Annie Morford. We had an enjoyable celebration with  teammates, parents and friends. This was a great bonding year for all. And, thanks to all the parents who worked so hard in every way.  View the season highlights video here.

Club Volleyball Tryouts

Some of our girls have enjoyed Club Volleyball. They elevated their skills and expanded their relationships by playing with other athletes from around central Ohio. Club volleyball usually entails two or three evening practices per week with tournaments on Saturdays. Most clubs offer a winter season (Dec through Feb) and a spring season (Feb through April.) We encourage parents and athletes to check this out.

Ohio Valley Region of USA Volleyball
This is the national sanctioning body for all juniors volleyball. The site offers a wealth of information and lists Club teams and tournaments throughout the year.
Most Central Ohio club tryouts for high school-age girls are on Sunday, November 14.  Below are links to some of local clubs. Please let us know if we are missing any important contacts:

Volley for the Cure at Granville

We congratulate the Granville High School on an outstanding Volley For the Cure fundraising program last Thursday. The program packed the stands and raised thousands of dollars for breast cancer research. Our Lady Vikes were proud to compete in the feature match against the Blue Aces.  See the photo archive here.

Support the Charlie David Dinner

On October 8, Columbus Academy will host the Annual Charlie David Dinner prior to the varsity football game. This event features a buffet dinner, silent auction, raffles and other fun fundraising activities. This is the ONLY fundraiser for athletics at CA and a major portion of your contribution is tax deductible.

If you are considering a donation to the Charlie David Dinner, and volleyball is your daughter's only sport, we ask that you designate your contribution to the volleyball program. That designation will help support needs for next year's program. The attached form may be submitted to the athletic office with your check.

Tuesday Post-Game Dinner

Steve and Sandy Maratea have offered to provide dinner for the volleyball team following their game on Tuesday.  The dinner will take place in the dining hall. It won't last long, but it will be fun for the girls. The JV girls can either stay to watch the Varsity play, or Cyndi Yakscoe can provide a quiet place for them to work on homework until the Varsity game is over.
Please respond to the Maratea's or Cyndi Yakscoe by Monday evening if you will attend so they may plan accordingly.

Vikings Show Promise

Despite losing six seniors from 2009, the young Columbus Academy team showed skill and talent in its first outing at the Annual Kick-off Classic. Lead by senior Alyssa Sheer, the Academy Vikes made a strong showing as they served, bumped and spiked against Tree of Life Christian, Linden McKinley and Fairfield Christian. Kick-Off Camaraderie

The Varsity and JV teams and coaches enjoyed a few hours of fellowship and pizza after practice on Friday. It was an opportunity to get to know each other better before hectic school and game calendars kick in. The girls had a good time — then headed home to bed before an early Saturday lifting session.

Join the Fun! Volunteers Needed

We need parents to line judge, keep the scorebook, run the clock and track liberos at each Varsity and JV home game. We are asking all parents to help for a handful of games to elevate the burden on a small core group.
It's easy and it's fun!
Cyndy Yakscoe is coordinating these game-day officiating roles. Please see the schedule at right and contact her via email: cyndi_yakscoe(at)columbusacademy.org, or by phone. (She's in the school directory.)
